An OVID Health article by David Talbot
Labour, unlike the Conservatives, does not take to regicide easily. With the resignation of Wes Streetingย this afternoon, it has been plunged into the very chaos it spent years telling the nation it would avoid.
The Prime Ministerโs predecessor but two, Boris Johnson, famously said that โwhen the herd moves, it movesโ and Labourโs tectonic plates have certainly been moving in recent weeks.
Firstly, the Kremlinology. Under the Labour Partyโs rulebook, to borrow a phrase from an exasperated Theresa May in 2017, โ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐ฑโ. Despite Streeting and his allies claiming he โhas the numbersโ a formal leadership contest is not triggered until 20 per cent of Labour MPs formally nominate a candidate. Given Streetingโs resignation letter ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฅ ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ต ๐ฆ๐น๐ฑ๐ญ๐ช๐ค๐ช๐ต๐ญ๐บ ๐ด๐ต๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ช๐ด ๐ค๐ฉ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐จ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ, it is unclear as to when – or if – such a threshold may be achieved.
Secondly, amidst all the Westminster drama, ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ก๐๐ฆ ๐ ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต on Tuesday. Whilst it is predominantly the formal vehicle to scrap NHS England, it contained a series of measures which are of fundamental importance to the next Secretary of State.
Streetingโs resignation letter was, in part, a long list of (self-marked) achievements. The true is more nuanced. Yes, the NHSย met its target of treating 65 per cent of patients within 18 weeks – but ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ถ๐น๐น ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฒ ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ณ ๐บ๐ถ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐.
Lastly, what does this mean for UK life sciences? The honest answer is, as identified in OVID Healthโs well-timed panel event this morning, that ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐บ๐๐๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐. Since 2024, there have been 5 major policy announcements for UK life sciences sector.
The new Health and Social Care Secretary, whoever they may be, will
To return to Boris Johnsonโs valedictory speech in 2023: “No one is remotely indispensable, and our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader, equally committed to taking this country forward through tough timesโ.
